Brain Injury Services Ltd exist in order to maximise the rehabilitation of the client, be it at home on in other appropriate rehabilitative settings.

The goal of rehabilitation is to help people regain the most independent level of functioning possible.

From Don’s experience he considers there to be 4 key steps in the process of rehabilitation:

  • Step 1:
Saving of life, stabilisation, Acute-Specialist Hospital Care
  • Step 2:
Intensive Neuro Therapy (Specialist Hospital / Specialist Private Facility)
    • Physio
    • Speech
    • Occupational Therapy
  • Step 3:
Neuro Therapy / Structured, Consistent Environment
    • Neuropsychology – Issues of Cognition
    • Specialist support (Rehabilitation Support Workers)
    • Plus some / all in Step 2
  • Step 4:
    Progressive Supportive Independence
    • Flat within a Rehab setting
    • Small Domestic Bungalow
    • Supported Living
      - Back in Family home
      - Own home in community / modified for need
    • Independent living, some outreach suppor
    • Total Independent living

Throughout the various stages the case manger has to have regard not only to the client needs, but also the impact of the clients injury upon the family which is generally of a devastating nature. Family members will demonstrate a range of emotion over time, typically:

  • Stage 1: Shock, Fear, Panic, Denial
  • Stage 2: Relief, Elation
  • Stage 3: Hope
  • Stage 4: Realization, Anger, Depression, Mourning

In order to make rehabilitation work Don considers there to be a number of essential components:

  • Seamless Managed Progression through a rehabilitation pathway
  • Case Management
  • Goal / Need orientated / Team working
  • Structure, routine and consistency for the brain injured person.
