2007 Case Manager of the Year - Don Young, Brain Injury Services Ltd
Sponsored by TICCS

Highly Commended - Sue Mosiezny, senior case manager, AIG Medical & Rehabilitation.

The winner of this year's Case Manager of the Year award stood out among a range of excellent entries. Don Young impressed the judging panel with an incredible story, which demonstrates a model of best practice and underlines his determination, compassion, innovation and dedication to his job and his client.

The case detailed in his entry concerns a woman who suffered from catastrophic anoxic brain damage as a result of medical negligence while giving birth to her first child in 1996. The injuries left Kerstin only able to move her head and her eyes, with no verbal communication and an inability to eat or drink. Her son was born without obvious harm but her husband suffered severe post traumatic stress disorder. One of the largest medical negligence compensation payouts was eventually made by the NHS hospital concerned.

Stuart Peall, director of sales and business development at TI CCS, left, presents the award to Don Young of Brain Injury Services.

Mr. Young was appointed case manager in 1999, and during the past eight years has had a consistent involvement in leading the case and Kerstin's care.

The entry is supported by glowing references from the client's husband, the clinical neuropsychologist and expert witness in the trial, as well as the solicitor acting for his client.

Throughout the course of the case, Mr. Young established management systems, recruited a team of rehabilitation support workers, planned major structural adaptations to the house as well as managing the complex and emotional issues associated with those involved.

Throughout his time as case manager, Mr. Young has consistently pushed the boundaries and taken balanced risks, enabling Kerstin - with the help of a stable, motivated and well-trained support team - to host her own art exhibitions, attend dance events, pop concerts and go on holidays, including campervan tours and skiing.

In summation, one of the judges said that this was an incredible story that ticks every single box of what case management is all about.

WINNING WORDS
Don Young said: "I was absolutely delighted to have won this award. It is a tribute not only for me but for the entire team and the effort that has gone into giving Kerstin a quality of life. As a professional, I do what I do as a case manager because I know it can make a big difference to the quality of people's lives. We are very good at saying well done for other person’s work, but not so good in accepting thanks ourselves. This award makes it a very meaningful and satisfying word to accept."
